This activity will guide you through the process of sorting through different values. You'll start by quickly going through whether these values matter or don't matter. It will slowly make you narrow them down until we are left with your top five values.

STAGE 1: Initial Sort

Drag each value card into one of the three categories: "Not Important to Me", "Somewhat Important", or "Very Important"

Not Important to Me

Somewhat Important

What do I do with this now?

A values card sort is common with the ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) modality. It is a tool that can be helpful in assessing and examining what is truly of value to us in our lives. I like using this tool in several ways.

  1. As a general tool, once you have your top 5 values, take a look at how they align with your life. Are you living according to your values in your work life? Social life? Leisure time? Why or why not? Do you want to live more in line with these values, and if so, what barriers are in your way?

  2. Sometimes it can be useful and interesting to revisit our values after a couple months or years, to see what has changed. We are human! What’s important to us will likely not stay completely the same. We have learned different things and met different people that have caused our values to shift and adapt. What are your values now and if they’re different do you need to make some adjustments in your life?

  3. Maybe you’re considering a change in your social life or work life, but aren’t sure where to start. Doing this activity, with the entire focus on ‘ what are my values in this part of my life’ can be helpful to give you a direction of where to start or pinpoint what isn’t working in that domain of your life.

After the values activity, I think taking a look at this ACT bullseye activity from Russ Hariss that can be super helpful to further pinpoint how these values are or are not showing up in your life.

It can be helpful to review your values with your therapist or even a life/work coach if you have one! Share this info with them. If you’re looking for support, reach out to a therapist. You don’t have to do it alone! However you choose to work on continuing to explore your self and live the most realized version of yourself is amazing, and I’m so glad you’ve started your personal journey!
